Sharing Knowledge - Training Within Industries Program
As a Lean champion, sharing knowledge is a role I enjoy! One key historical component that is under appreciated is the Training Within Industries Program (TWI). Established in the 1940's, the TWI program was developed by the United States War Manpower Commission to provide managers and leaders with skills to lead respectfully and maximize production for the war effort.
After WWII, the United States used the TWI program to help rebuild the manufacturing base of Japan. One Japanese company that used the programs with a lot of success is Toyota. In fact, Taiichi Ohno learned and taught the TWI courses (Job Relations, Job Instructions, and Job Methods) to his team and used the principles and tools to help build the Toyota Production System.
In honor of the rich history the United States of America played to advance improvement philosophy and practices, I have made available the original TWI training manuals below.
